“I have found that your life shifts whenever you clear your stuff about God. Life gets easier. To be happy, you do not have to be religious about God, but you have to be unafraid of God.”
Every week I write about something I hope will help you live a better life. Often, I like to address obstacles of how we get in our way. What if your biggest block in life has been your resistance to God? Hear me out, please, because I don’t want you to focus on religion.
A big part of my work is helping people get out of their way. But I’ve spent 99.9% of that time focused on business strategies or obstacles in our minds. Now I’m wondering if that’s too small, and for the first time, I’m writing to you to ask: Do you think that God limits what you can accomplish but not on the highest achievers at your firm or in your industry?
I’ve always wanted to make a positive difference in my life, but what drove me has often felt like it was coming from a place of ‘there’s something wrong that has to be fixed’. Can you relate? I’m not sure how to describe this negative source and negative feeling as it’s become blended over decades by everything from childhood pain, to business achievement, goals, fears, business failure, and dozens upon dozens of tips, techniques, and strategies from piles of books and weeks of seminars to spur on my A type activities. Often, it’s not been a particularly enjoyable journey, and I can no longer be a team sponsor to this way of being. Too much fear and not enough love.
I’ve had my own issues with God and religion that clearly had such an adverse effect on me as a 10–11-year-old that I unwittingly decided to reject it from then on.
I realize that almost everyone has fairly strong opinions on this topic, and I respect that. Here is the message: I want to stop resisting so I can be a more loving person who lives ever more from his heart and spirit. What re-sparked it was feeling the presence of evil so close to home when I was confined to my home on July 4th with my family because a killer was on the loose after murdering eight people at a parade three miles away.

Robert Holden explains in Shift Happens that God – to him – is bigger than one religion.
God is universal in spirit and is:
The creative impulse that supports the highest in everyone
God is bigger than your prospecting problems, fear, frustration, ego, and self. Yet your Unconditioned Self has no limits. It is your learned ego and self-image that has placed limits and labels on you and your business.
I’ve spent my whole life putting others on pedestals because of their impressive achievements. I’ve often treated them as a superior species and that I was just some medium to translate their gospel to anyone that would listen. By being at odds with God and believing my limiting ego, it’s limited how I see myself (and possibly how I see others). I did not know that the source of love was not outside me. It’s within me – within all of us. My Unconditioned Self – and yours – allows us to treat everyone as an equal (including that huge prospect and the person emptying your bins outside).
It is NOT your Unconditioned Self – the self you were born with – it is your learned ego and self-image that limits you and chooses from:
*How much success you can expect
*How much happiness is acceptable
*How much peace of mind is ‘normal’
*How much love you deserve
*How much abundance is ‘realistic’
Aren’t you tired of looking at the prix fixe menu every day?
As Marianne Williamson says:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously permit other people to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Nelson Mandela read this when he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first president in 1994. Our light is God (however you define God). Darkness is our tiny ego and doing things out of fear. Fear is the opposite of love. I’ve been tuned into the wrong radio station. Why spend all day in the courtroom listening to my ego judging me when I can listen to my heart, my Unconditioned Self and to God?
A Course in Miracles tells us that what we treasure is in our hearts. That’s what I felt on July 4th. My treasure was clear. And the fear and the darkness were very clear too. Cowering inside the house felt wrong. Hiding from fear felt wrong. And the response must be fighting this darkness not from a place of fear but from a place of love by being more loving, unconditionally accepting myself, and an instrument of love.
I have a flawed shell but a very healthy spirit
I’ve made mistakes but these do not define me
I want to be guided by a light that shines all the time
I don’t want to be limited by my learned petty ego
And sure neither do you
Take it or leave it but I like these words from A Course in Miracles – it’s written in Christian language but has a universal message:
I am here only to be truly helpful
I am here to represent Him Who sent me
I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do,
Because He Who sent me will direct me
I am content to be wherever He wishes,
Knowing He goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal
You can’t solve everything alone, so here’s a grand solution to consider. The saying goes that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Drop your self-imposed limits and consider opening up further to some universal guidance.
To choose love over fear!
